Complex.com reported today, in an article entitled “Introducing ComicBlitz, the Netflix of Comic Books”, on a new digital comic iPad app that works on the same business model as Netflix – but for digital comics. For 9.99 per month readers have access to over 2000 titles with promise of an ever growing catalogue. Currently only available for iOS, ComicBlitz plans to expand to other platforms.
ComicBlitz joins a growing field of several streaming services, such as Scribd and Crunchyroll, which have launched over the last two years.
If Marvel’s Unlimited program, which launched in 2007 is any indicator, streaming is not expected to be a dominant part of the industry any time soon. However, as far as I am concerned, a broader playing field can only be fantastic news for the indie comic industry!
